Coral Reef Restoration
Coral Reef Restoration
Coral reefs are among the most endangered ecosystems on earth. They are disappearing around the world at alarming rates. Reefs in 93 of the 109 countries containing them have been damaged or destroyed. Climate change, urban development, commercial collectors, diminishing reef fish populations and both commercial and private vessels have all had some part in destroying these beautiful living ecosystems. If the pace of destruction is maintained, another 60% of our coral reefs throughout the world could be lost in the next 20-40 years.
Ocean Caraibes has entered an agreement with Biorock to be their partner in the Caribbean and use their mineral accretion technology throughout the Caribbean if a client should wish to use it. Mineral accretion technology is a third generation reef restoration process. It is perhaps the most exciting and unique process in that it uses low voltage electricity to encourage growth of marine organisms (including coral) to grow upon the substrate. Reefs of any size and configuration can be constructed for a project. Broken coral fragments are found along the seabeds and fixed to the structure. The electrolytic reaction created by the electricity creates limestone, which is the exoskeleton of corals. The corals are able to grown upon the structure.
